HOUSTON — Grant Delpit had more than college coaches visit him at his school this week.
Four members of the United States Army came by to present the four-star safety with his All-American Award at Lamar High School in Houston (see video above).
“This is crazy,” Delpit told SEC Country after receiving his award. “I never thought I’d play in the Army Bowl. I watch it on TV every year, so actually going to it will be amazing. I’m just thankful I have the opportunity to do it.”
The 6-foot-3, 181-pounder received his invite last month to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be played on Jan. 7, 2017 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The game holds special meaning for Delpit.
“My grandparents, Kathleen and Luke Delpit, were actually in the Navy and served in the military, so I’m playing for them,” he said. “I like how all the soldiers are in the stands to watch us. It’s an honor.”
Delpit is ranked the nation’s No. 11 safety in the 247Sports Composite and has three SEC schools (Alabama, Florida, LSU) in his top 10.
