Earlier this weekend, 4-star small forward Juwan Gary included the South Carolina basketball team among his five favorites.
Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech round out the list for Gary, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 54 overall prospect in the Class of 2019. Gary also is the No. 3-ranked in-state prospect.
In March, after Gary (6-foot-6, 200 pounds) led Gray Collegiate Academy to a state championship, he shared details of a recent interaction with South Carolina coach Frank Martin.
“The day of the state championship game, he texted me and said, ‘Just come back home with the state championship. If you win, it’s going to be history,’ and that’s what I did,” Gary said. “Mainly, his talks with me aren’t about basketball, they’re about life. But, at the same time, we talk about if I do commit there, I’d be a good fit for him.
“I’m an elite scorer, so at the same time, just give me the ball, I can make offense [happen]. I play defense on the court, too, so that’s what we talk about.”
South Carolina also is in the mix for the top 2 in-state basketball prospects: 5-star point guard Josiah James (Porter-Gaud, Charleston, S.C.) and 4-star small forward Christian Brown (Lower Richland, Columbia, S.C.).
