Several South Carolina commits were unsure where the pieces were going to fall in the wake of Steve Spurrier’s surprise retirement.
According to Will Putnam, a 3-star offensive lineman, though, a handful of the program’s commits rallied around 4-star quarterback Brandon Mcllwain and his allegiance to the Gamecocks.
“With Brandon being a quarterback and one of the leaders of the team, him being so strongly committed, he was saying no matter what he’s still committed to South Carolina,” Putnam told the AJC’s SEC Country. “That reflected off on all of us, CJ (Freeman) and all those other guys.”
Mcllwain, a dual-threat quarterback from Newton, Penn., was the second recruit to commit to the program in 2016. On Tuesday, he took to Twitter to reaffirm his loyalty to the Gamecocks.
The 6-foot, 200-pound product from Council Rock North High has been praised for his leadership and it certainly shows.
I love SC for many reasons, while Coach Spurrier was one of them I respect his decision and I am still fully committed to SC #WECOCKY??
