COLUMBIA, S.C. — A.J. Turner entered the fall as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart, but the redshirt freshman has made a move through the first eight days of fall camp at South Carolina.
The Clifton, Va., native now is the top running back heading into Saturday’s first fall scrimmage.
“Since the start of camp, right now, it’s A.J. first, Bear (Paulk) second, then me with the (first-team),” junior Rod Talley said. “Dave Williams … and the other guys are with the (second-team) right now.
“It could change any day. Don’t get too comfortable with yourself, keep working every day, that’s the mindset you’ve got to have.”
Williams was the most highly recruited of the bunch, but coach Will Muschamp said there is a need for more consistency from the junior.
“Everybody expected and wanted Dave to be that guy, but coach had a problem with him at first, and we’re still trying to get him consistent every day,” Talley said. “Again, like I said, it’s always open. Don’t get too comfortable with yourself, because we have a lot of great backs in the backfield that want to take your spot. You have to be on your toes at all times.”
The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Turner redshirted last season.
