Shawn Elliott was named South Carolina’s interim head coach in place of Steve Spurrier Tuesday, but he isn’t the favorite to be patrolling the sidelines of Williams-Brice Stadium next season.
According to Bovada, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is the 5-2 favorite to be the Gamecocks head coach in 2016. Smart was in the mix for other SEC head coaching opportunities, including Auburn in 2012, before deciding to remain on the Alabama sidelines.
Elliott is the second favorite with 3-1 odds. Elliott, a 19-year assistant who has spent the last six at South Carolina, will coach his first game Saturday against Vanderbilt.
Memphis coach Justin Fuente and LSU defensive line coach Ed Orgeron are listed at 4-1 odds. Fuente is in his fourth season with Memphis, while Orgeron is in his first with LSU. Previously, Orgeron was the interim coach at Southern California, and spent three years as the head coach at Ole Miss.
Western Kentucky coach Jeff Brohm (7-1), Toledo coach Matt Campbell (8-1) and Louisiana-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth (8-1) are other possibilities listed. Utah State coach Matt Wells (12-1) and Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio (20-1) are considered long shots, though Dantonio is a South Carolina alumnus.
Here are some other candidates that could be in the mix for the position.
