Former NBA star and proud South Carolina alum Alex English said the Gamecocks men’s and women’s basketball teams “are hitting their peak at the right time” during an appearance on ESPN on Tuesday.
South Carolina is the only school with both of its men’s and women’s basketball teams in the Final Four of their respective NCAA basketball tournaments.
The South Carolina men reached the Final Four with a 77-70 victory against Florida in an Elite 8 game in Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday.
The South Carolina women reached the Final Four with a 71-64 victory against Florida State in an Elite 8 game in Stockton, Calif. on Monday.
“Everybody here in Gamecock Nation is very proud of the teams,” English said.
The South Carolina men play Gonzaga in an NCAA semifinal game in Phoenix, Ariz. on Saturday.
English said South Carolina men’s basketball coach Frank Martin has done an outstanding job of building the Gamecock’s program.
“The men have got to continue playing the tough, tough Frank Martin defense they have played all year,” English said. “Everybody is doing their job.”
The South Carolina women play Stanford in an NCAA semifinal game in Dallas, Texas on Friday.
The South Carolina women’s basketball team has been a perennial NCAA Tournament power over the years.
“They know what they’ve got to do,” English said.
English even had strong words for the Southeastern Conference.
“SEC basketball has come back,” he said.
