Birmingham Bowl storylines
The State’s Josh Kendall broke down five bowl storylines for the Gamecocks as they prepare to take on USF on Dec. 29.
The biggest story for me: Forget the Clemson game.
“The best thing about bowl eligibility is South Carolina doesn’t have to sit all offseason with the memory of a 56-7 loss to Clemson as its final game,” writes Kendall. “The Birmingham Bowl gives the Gamecocks a chance to gain back some confidence and maybe get back in the win column going into the offseason.”
Highly recommend everyone check out Kendall’s full piece.
MJ Webb joins the Gamecocks for Birmingham Bowl prep
Early enrollee MJ Webb is set to join the team for its Birmingham Bowl practices, starting on Saturday.
“I think it’s a win-win,” Muschamp said of Webb’s addition. “You get to come in and see the tempo of practice. That’s always a little bit of an issue, with some change. You get to meet the players. So, your first time on campus, you’re not trying to meet everybody. You get to be a part of that.”
Webb is one of four players from the 2017 class set to enroll early.
While the Madison, Ga., native certainly won’t see the field on Dec. 29 against USF, the mere presence of another body, especially on the defensive side of the ball, should help the offense better prepare.
A highly touted defensive end coming off the edge, showing QB Jake Bentley something he’s never seen before, can only make the young Gamecocks even better.

Though he didn’t get to throw in any jabs at Chalmers’ former team (Clemson), Muschamp did have nothing but solid things to say about his two latest “Spurs Up” commitments:
“Both have extremely good ball skills down the field, as far as playing and judging the ball. Both can make plays down the field, I just think from a speed standpoint.”
If one of two JUCO DBs have half the impact former JUCO DB Mark King had on the Gamecocks in 2016, the secondary is in for a major boost next season. Really excited about both these players and would love Chalmers to have the chance at redemption against the Tigers next November.
Gamecocks hire new OL coach … sort of
“For the bowl game only, John Latina will coach our offensive line,” Muschamp told reporters on Thursday. “A guy I’ve got tremendous respect for in the profession.”
Latina, a former OL coach at Duke and Ole Miss, is coming out of retirement to join fellow former Duke coach Kurt Roper in preparation for the Birmingham Bowl.

The No. 6 Lady Gamecocks improved to 8-1 with a 81-63 win against Clemson (8-2) on Thursday night.
Forward Aja Wilson led the Gamecocks with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, while Clemson’s attack was spearheaded by junior Nelly Perry and her 20 points and 4 rebounds.
“How different is the (CLA) crowd? I wish I could dress them all in orange and purple and bring them back to Clemson with me,” Clemson coach Audra Smith said after the game.
With the win, the Lady Gamecocks have won seven straight in the series.
Big picture: The victory over Clemson alleviates the tiniest bit of pain from the thrashing in the Palmetto Bowl back in November, but for now, I’m holding out hope for the Buckeyes to help end this nightmare.
