Try to remember what you thought about the South Carolina basketball team this time two weeks ago. We all watched them in the regular season, and they were a good team to be sure, but be honest — did you ever see this coming?
If you did, good for you, but most people did not. And it wasn’t just because they didn’t know much about the Gamecocks or that they had misconceptions about Frank Martin’s team. Statistics also went a long way towards backing up the notion that South Carolina probably wouldn’t go very far in March.
One statistic really put that line of thinking in perspective: ESPN’s BPI (Basketball Power Index). BPI gave the Gamecocks just a 0.3 percent chance of making it to Phoenix for the Final Four:

Just about every team’s chances are low, to be sure, but according to BPI, South Carolina was all but guaranteed to not make its first Final Four appearance in school history. As they say, however, that’s why you play the games.
