On Monday night, 5-star defensive end KJ Henry, the No. 14 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, released a top 5 and South Carolina made the cut.
Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Virginia Tech round out the list.
Henry, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite a the No. 2 overall prospect from the state of North Carolina, is on track to graduate this December from West Forsyth High School in Clemmons.
The Gamecocks hosted him for a visit in April during the Garnet & Black spring game.
“It’s really no secret that they’re looking for some pass rushers,” Henry told SEC Country, during The Opening in Charlotte, N.C.
“They say I could make an immediate impact and that’s something that sounds special. [Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson], he came down and he told me pretty much, at my school, everybody knows my name there. It would pretty much be the same [at South Carolina].
“Just thinking about that, that’s a really special feeling. Great school. Very competitive as well.”
Henry profiles at the ‘Buck’ spot for South Carolina, a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker position.
The Gamecocks currently have a pair of defensive ends committed in 2018: 3-star Kingsley Enagbare (Atlanta, Ga.) and Tyreek Johnson (Sumter, S.C.). Their lone linebacker pledge is 3-star Ernest Jones IV (Waycross, Ga.).
