Former South Carolina pitcher Jordan Montgomery is set to make his MLB debut.
Montgomery, a left-hander, won the job as the New York Yankees’ fifth starter, according to multiple reports on Monday. Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays will be his first appearance in that role.
Montgomery came on strong this spring , making a big impression that put him in consideration for the fifth spot in Yankees rotation.
He made a start this week for Tampa, a Florida State League team at High-A level, striking out eight in five innings. He reportedly was schedule to make a start at AAA next, but the Yankees called Montgomery up instead.
Montgomery, a Sumter, S.C., native, was drafted in the fourth round, 122nd overall, of the 2014 MLB Draft.
He went 20-7 with a 2.87 ERA in 44 appearances with 42 starts in three years with the Gamecocks.
