Former South Carolina basketball player Rolando Howell died on Wednesday at the age of 34, according to media reports.
Howell broke his C5 vertebrae in an accident in May and was paralyzed. The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C. reported that his death was due to complications from that injury.
Howell played four seasons (2001-04) with the Gamecocks, and he was a member of the last South Carolina team to advance to the NCAA Tournament. During his college career, Howell averaged 9.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds. He played professionally overseas in Europe and Asia.
Several past and present members of the Gamecock basketball family took to social media to react to the news, including current men’s head basketball coach Frank Martin.
