Former NFL and South Carolina punter Max Runager died on June 30 after suffering from a blood clot, according to Orangeburg County chief deputy coroner Sean Fogle. He was 61.
Runager was inducted into the University of South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2013. He also is a member of the state’s Hall of Fame as of 2007. He started for the Gamecocks for three years — a captain in 1978 — before moving on to an illustrious professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns.
He was the starter in a pair of Super Bowls (XIX and XXIII) won by the 49ers.
