Perry Orth and Jake Bentley were South Carolina teammates a season ago. Orth graduated, while Bentley is back to lead the Gamecocks offense again in 2017.
Although Orth is no longer on campus, he recently told Mike Uva of WACH-TV that the two quarterbacks have remained close friends. And when Orth hosted a quarterback camp in Columbia on Saturday, he had advice for Bentley, who is entering his sophomore season.
“Don’t buy into all of the hype,” Orth told Uva. “Continue to do the things you’ve done to get you where you were, because as soon as you let some of that stuff start to get to your head, you go downhill a little.”
During his four seasons with the Gamecocks, Orth had 2,595 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. Most of his playing time came during his junior year in 2015, when he threw for 1,929 yards and all 12 of his career touchdowns.
Bentley threw for 1,420 yards and nine touchdowns in seven games during his rookie season last year. He was recently named to the Davey O’Brien Award watch list for this season.
