COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina coach Frank Martin met with reporters after a Saturday afternoon win over Texas A&M at Colonial Life Arena.
Here’s what Martin said after the 79-68 win, the Gamecocks’ second in SEC play:
- Opening statement: “Real quality win for us. Obviously, they’ve got some young players, but they’ve got some guys that were part of an NCAA tournament team. The one thing, as a competitor … you worry about when they don’t play well before yours … they obviously didn’t play as well as they wanted to, I assume, against Kentucky. … you’re going to get their best shot, so I’m real proud of our guys, the way they dealt with it. They were never rattled. And we were good enough to make some plays, offensively, which we struggled with all game. We found a way to win.”
- First half defense: “We weren’t very good, defensively, on rotations. I thought our initial hit, defensively, was solid. … our rotations were bad today. Some of our young guys rotated off the wrong people.”
- Turnover disparity: “I thought our initial hit, defensively, was pretty good. The problem was, when they got the ball past a certain point, they didn’t try to pass anymore, they just attacked us. Sometimes, we got them sped up, which was our plan. … our defensive rebounding is no good. That better get fixed. That’s my job to fix that and it’s the players’ job to take ownership of that.”
- On Rakym Felder’s play (he tied for the team-high in scoring with 19): “Now, he’s starting to understand what we do. … the first thing that jumped out at me is the confidence he plays with … like I tell him everyday, you’ve got to keep understanding what we’re doing, so you can play with that confidence, within our structure.”
