COLUMBIA, S.C. – Evan Hinson is not playing this season for South Carolina football, as the freshman tight end takes a redshirt.
He also is making the most of any time on his hands, as he also is practicing with the South Carolina basketball team.
“We don’t practice on Mondays and we practice in the mornings, so when he is able to and doesn’t have class or study hall, he goes and practices with Frank (Martin),” coach Will Muschamp said on his radio show Thursday. “I talked to Frank last night and he thinks he is going to be a pretty good basketball player.”
The 6-foot-4, 238-pound Hinson signed with the Gamecocks out of Deltona, Fla., where he was a two-sport star. He averaged 23.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists as a junior, being named the Daytona Beach News-Journal’s player of the year.
On the gridiron, he is a player Muschamp thinks has a bright future, adding to the current depth and future depth at tight end.
“We are excited about what we have and the future at the position,” Muschamp said. “Those guys fit what we want at the position.”
