Two months after defensive back Chris Moody announced he would transfer from South Carolina, the senior has changed his mind and will stay for the 2016 season, according to coach Will Muschamp.
“Chris was going to transfer when we first got here, that was the word that I got,” Muschamp told reporters on Tuesday, via Ben Breiner of The State. “[Moody] recently expressed some desire to stay at South Carolina. So he’s still here and we gave him an opportunity to come out here and practice with us.”
Moody’s return is a boost for the Gamecocks at a position that lacks depth. He has played in 37 career games with seven starts. Muschamp joked about the team’s serious need for safety depth when asked on Tuesday if Moody can contribute.
“I hope so,” Muschamp told reporters. “Goodnight. Me and [defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson] may line up at safety.”
Moody’s return to the program even took some of his teammates by surprise, including linebacker Larenz Bryant, who told The State that he didn’t know the defensive back returned to the team until he saw him on the team tram headed to the practice field.
