South Carolina defensive tackle signee Javon Kinlaw is scheduled to graduate from Jones County Junior College on May 5.
Two days later, the 4-star recruit from Goose Creek, S.C. reports to Columbia, where he’ll begin his much-anticipated career with the Gamecocks.
Kinlaw, who enrolled at the Mississippi junior college in January of 2015, opted to take a path to South Carolina that mirrors the route utilized by defensive end Dante Sawyer.
“It’s been a long process, but I’m glad to say that it’s almost over with,” Kinlaw said. “My career has not started yet. As soon as I step foot on campus is when it will begin.”
As a freshman, Kinlaw had 26 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 4 tackles for loss. He was placed at Jones County after committing to South Carolina during his senior year at Goose Creek High School.
Instead of graduating from high school, Kinlaw obtained his GED, to begin his accelerated track at the junior college level. He’ll have four years to play three seasons for the Gamecocks.
Kinlaw entertained offers from Alabama and Southern Cal before finalizing his commitment to South Carolina this past signing day. He’ll arrive with high expectations.
“Me being a JUCO guy, I already know what it takes,” Kinlaw said. “That’s why I’m very grateful for the time I’ve spent here.”
On Monday, TheBigSpur was first to report Kinlaw’s enrollment schedule. A day later, during an appearance on 107.5 The Game, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp confirmed that Kinlaw and JUCO linebacker signee Eldridge Thompson would arrive in May.
“For those guys to get an extra month to lift and be under the instruction of our strength staff will be very beneficial for us,” Muschamp said.
