What a memorable night for Dawn Staley, Frank Martin and so many South Carolina students at the Darius Rucker concert.
The country music star held a concert Wednesday at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C., as a way to make good on a promise after the Gamecocks’ football team won six games during the 2016 season. But one of the highlights of the night involved Staley and Martin when the coaches opened the show by leading the crowd in a loud “GAME-COCKS” cheer.
Staley, the Gamecocks women’s basketball coach, and Martin, coach of the South Carolina men’s basketball team, led their respective squads to amazing NCAA Tournament runs. Staley guided a group that claimed the program’s first national title. Martin’s leadership helped lift his program to its first Final Four berth.
Later Wednesday night, both coaches tweeted their thanks to Rucker for making the concert possible.

Both these messages are great to see. And a special shoutout goes to Staley for wearing the championship net around her neck again. (Has she taken it off since Sunday? Let’s hope not.)
Rucker couldn’t have picked a better time to throw this concert. What began as a celebration for the football team’s progress became so much more. Kudos to all involved.
