The number 21 comes with high expectations around Williams-Brice Stadium these days.
The newest Gamecock to adorn 21 on his jersey, freshman running back Rico Dowdle, can thank one of his predecessors in the South Carolina backfield. From 2010-12, Marcus Lattimore rushed for 2,677 yards and 38 scores before suffering a career-ending knee injury. Simply, he was one of the most dominant backs in recent SEC memory.
Enter: Dowdle. The freshman, rated three stars out of A.C. Reynolds High School (Asheville, N.C.), hasn’t played yet this season because of a groin injury. But it’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll see his first time on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.
So the former No. 21 took it upon himself to tweet his support.

As for the opinion of a current South Carolina running back?
“I think he did really good (Tuesday),” backfield partner A.J. Turner said. “He’s fast. He’s physical. He’s big. He has to learn the plays and I think he will be alright.”
