COLUMBIA, S.C. – Perry Orth remains in the dark.
Just like the rest of the free world, Orth doesn’t know for sure which quarterback Will Muschamp is going to start in South Carolina’s season opener at Vanderbilt.
The senior quarterback at least has an idea when he and freshman Brandon McIlwain will receive the verdict.
“I think they’ll make (the decision) either the night before the game or the day of,” Orth said, “So I guess we’ll find out.”
Orth and McIlwain were listed as the co-starters after spring practice and have alternated first-team reps during preseason camp. Both candidates, according to Orth, are anxious to learn who will get the nod against the Commodores on Thursday night.
“We’d both like to know and we’ve both played very well this camp,” Orth said. “Whatever the decision the coaches make we’ll be supportive of that.”
Not knowing doesn’t change anything for Orth, who passed for 1,929 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
“You’ve always got to prepare like you’re going to start,” he said. “I did the same thing last year. I’m going to do that this year.”
The third man in the mix, freshman Jake Bentley “has been getting some reps as well.”
“He’s still coming along, because he just got here in June, but he’s getting there,” Orth said.
