The message has been physical, tough and then some more physical for the Gamecocks, especially in the secondary.
Will Muschamp saw what he wanted on one rep in particular on Thursday during the three periods open to the media.
The player receiving the praise was redshirt freshman defensive back Antoine Wilder, who took on a blocker with force during a bubble screen drill. The result of his effort was Muschamp raising both his hands in the air and declaring, “Now we are getting physical!”
Junior Chris Lammons also was in on the particular rep that drew praise.
**It was Brandon McIlwain’s turn to take first-team reps on Thursday night, the first time the media has been in practice when he opened the reps. He and senior Perry Orth continue to rotate, as Orth came on for the second series of the tempo period. The freshman completed a pair of passes in the flat, as the receivers joining him for the first series were Javon Charleston, Chavis Dawkins and Jamari Smith.
**Junior running back David Williams, who has been the recipient of criticism during fall camp, took second-team reps during the team period behind redshirt freshman A.J. Turner.Williams looked like he was more determined in the handful of reps seen by the media.
Earlier Thursday, Muschamp said that Turner has been distancing himself as the No. 1 back.
**Deebo Samuel returned to practice, as Muschamp said earlier in the day. He didn’t take part in the initial tempo period, but was fielding punts and kickoffs later in practice.
**Senior defensive lineman Darius English took the initial reps at the BUCK spot and redshirt freshman Daniel Fennell came after him. In the middle, T.J. Holloman took the first reps at MIKE, while Jonathan Walton came in second.
**The second group of defensive backs featured Jamarcus King and Rico McWilliams at cornerback. King has been hovering back and forth between the “black” and “garnet” groups in practice.
Senior Jordan Diggs was the first nickleback getting snaps, while junior college transfer Steven Montac was next in line.
Junior defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth was among the players in yellow, but he was participating in the team period as a second-team defensive lineman.
