COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina looked like it might be in some trouble for the first 20 minutes Sunday.
But the Gamecocks cleaned up their play and got rolling in the second half to win 107-89 in their final exhibition against Newberry at Colonial Life Arena.
USC opened the second half on a 17-4 run after holding just a seven-point lead at halftime, thanks to 12 turnovers and 10 Newberry 3-pointers.
Sindarius Thornwell led the Gamecocks with 34 points. Duane Notice and P.J. Dozier each had 17 points, with Notice knocking down four 3-pointers.
Player of the game
The senior guard sparked the offense, slashing to the hoop, getting rebounds and getting the second-half run going. He finished with 34 points and 11 rebounds.
Stat line of the game
Thornwell recorded a double-double against Newberry, as mentioned above. Beyond his scoring and rebounding, he also had five blocks and five assists.

The Gamecocks held a single-digit halftime lead, but came out clicking to open the second half. The Gamecocks scored nine in a row as part of their 17-4 run to open the second half, finally giving them the margin they lacked in the first half.
South Carolina opens its regular season against Louisiana Tech at 6:30 p.m. Friday on the SEC Network.
