Report: New details indicate South Carolina closing in on head coach
South Carolina could be close to naming a permanent replacement for Steve Spurrier.
Assistant coaches were told to stop pursuing commitments from high school players, FoxSports.com’s Alex Marvez reported. This could mean that a new coach will be named soon, and the program wants to keep scholarships open for a new coach to pursue players of his choosing.
Spurrier resigned as coach in October. Shawn Elliott, previously the offensive line coach, was named the interim coach and is considered a candidate for the position.
Head coaches Justin Fuente (Memphis), Tom Herman (Houston), Rich Rodriguez (Arizona) and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart are among a number of candidates rumored to be in the mix for the South Carolina job.
Elliott is 1-3 as the Gamecocks’ interim coach after losing Saturday to Florida.
