The South Carolina football team received devastating news on Thursday.
Freshman defensive end Shameik Blackshear was shot multiple times in an incident that occurred Wednesday evening at an on-campus apartment complex, according to The State’s Harrison Cahill.
Blackshear was shot in the upper and lower body outside of one of the apartment buildings.
Columbia, S.C., police indicated that Blackshear — who was not identified by name — was in “serious condition” on Thursday, according to the Cahill. A source told The State that Blackshear is expected to be OK.
Blackshear, a 4-star prospect from nearby Bluffton, S.C., chose South Carolina over the likes of LSU, UGA and Clemson.
The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Blackshear played in two games while collecting two tackles for the Gamecocks this past season. After South Carolina’s loss to LSU, it was decided that Blackshear would be redshirted.
