One of the best player’s in the history of South Carolina football has died, as the school announced that Max Runager was found dead at the age of 61 on Friday.
Runager, who inducted into the University of South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2013, was found Friday afternoon in his car but no foul play was suspected.
In addition to being inducted into the University of South Carolina Hall of Fame, he was a member of the state’s hall of fame class in 2007 and an SEC Legends pick in 2013. Runager was a 3-year starter for the Gamecocks and a captain of the 1978 team.
After his time at South Carolina, Runager enjoyed an 11-year career in the NFL and was a member of the San Francisco 49ers’ 1984 championship team. Runager is fourth all-time in South Carolina history in career punt average with 41.1 yards.
Per the school, funeral services will be announced at a later date.
