Report: South Carolina hires special teams coordinator
Will Muschamp earned another commitment Tuesday, but not on the recruiting trail.
South Carolina named Coleman Hutzler the team’s new special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach, according to 247Sports’ Tony Morrell.
Hutzler, who spent the 2015 season at Boston College, previously coached under Muschamp at Florida in 2014.
In 2014 with the Gators, Hutzler coached special teams and directed the SEC’s second-best punt return unit, which finished 17th in the nation. He also coached the outside linebackers, including eventual first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr.
Hutzler spent 2012 and 2013 at New Mexico, where returner Carlos Wiggins nabbed Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year honors in 2013.
Hutzler was also in Gainesville, Fla., in 2010-11, coaching under then-special teams coordinator and linebackers coach DJ Durkin.
Hutzler has also had coaching stints at the University of San Diego and Stanford.
The Gamecocks finished 24th nationally in opponent’s kick return average and 68th in opponents punt return average in 2015 under Joe Robinson. Boston College finished 35th and second nationally in those categories this season.
