Will Muschamp has fired equipment manager Chris Matlock, who had been with the program for 16 years. Matlock was dismissed Friday afternoon along with his staff, according to a report from The State’s Josh Kendall.
Matlock came to the program in 2000 under then-head coach Lou Holtz and has remained with the Gamecocks ever since. Before joining South Carolina’s staff, Matlock served under Holtz as the head strength coach at Notre Dame for eight seasons.
Matlock and his staff worked with the Gamecocks throughout their spring practices and the spring game.
Earlier this week, the team announced that they were parting ways with Adrian Despres, who had been the Gamecocks’ chaplain for 17 years. USC Athletics spokesman Steve Fink said the decision was based on Muschamp’s preference “to have not just one voice, but multiple voices available to assist with the spiritual development of the student-athletes.”
Muschamp has declined to comment on Matlock’s dismissal.
