Shawn Elliott named South Carolina interim coach (Updated)
Shawn Elliott, get your visor ready.
The Gamecocks offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator was named South Carolina’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season, South Carolina confirmed on Tuesday.
Elliott takes over for Spurrier, who on Monday night decided to retire in his 11th season as the Gamecocks head coach, according to multiple reports. The 70-year-old Spurrier is expected to address the media at noon E.T.
Elliott has been an assistant for 19 years, but never a head coach. He has been a member of Steve Spurrier’s coaching staff since 2010.
In 2012, Elliott was promoted from running game coordinator to co-offensive coordinator. A year later, South Carolina posted a school-record 452.3 yards per game.
Elliott previously coached at Appalachian State where he helped the team nab three consecutive national championships from 2005 to 2007.
