Editor’s note: In advance of South Carolina’s contingent arriving at SEC Media Days, SEC Country is spotlighting each of the three Gamecocks players representing the program in Hoover, Ala., this week.
For Marquavius Lewis, the road to SEC Media Days included stops at Greenville Technical College and Hutchinson Community College.
After graduating from Greenwood (S.C.) High School in 2012, Lewis spent his first semester commuting to Greenville Tech as a part-time student. He enrolled at Hutchinson the following semester.
As a freshman, Lewis tallied 63 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks for Hutchinson.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Lewis was the No. 1 strong-side defensive end among junior college prospects in the Gamecocks’ Class of 2015. He finished his second and final season at Hutchinson with 63 tackles, including 20.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.
Lewis was one of only six South Carolina players to start in every game last season, and the only one of that group returning to the Gamecocks in 2016. During his first season in Columbia, Lewis finished sixth on the team with 45 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss. He was first among Gamecocks defenders with six quarterback pressures and second with three sacks.
Though the 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive end will accompany South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, WR Deebo Samuel and OT Mason Zandi to SEC Media Day, he might be a little out of his element.
South Carolina defensive line coach Lance Thompson said in an interview with The State that Lewis is not a “naturally outspoken guy.” But he’ll have a microphone in front of him soon enough, and it’ll be interesting to see what he has to say about Muschamp’s vision for South Carolina in 2016.
“He’s more of those guys that leads by the way he does things,” Thompson said. “But we’ve talked, and we want to develop him more in terms of being a more vocal leader with the young guys. At the end of the day, I want guys to be comfortable with what they do and the way they do it, but I was really pleased with Qua. He’s an outstanding kid.”
