It took a little while for Carlos Cortes to settle into the starting lineup for South Carolina baseball this season. But once he did, the freshman put up big numbers.
For his first season with the Gamecocks, Cortes was named to the freshman All-SEC team on Monday. Cortes was the lone Gamecocks player honored by the conference, which named first-team, second-team and all-defensive team honors.
Cortes came on strong in SEC play, leading the Gamecocks with a .323 batting average, 7 homers, 22 RBIs and a .624 slugging percentage.
For the season, Cortes tied for the team lead in home runs, with 9 in 44 games with 37 starts. The Oviedo, Fla., native hit .289 with 32 RBIs and a team-high .537 slugging percentage.
