South Carolina baseball was left mourning the loss of a local baseball player on Tuesday.
Brett Williams, a standout at Lexington (S.C.) White Knoll, was committed to play for the Gamecocks. But the player and person South Carolina coach Chad Holbrook called a “coaches dream” passed away Tuesday tragically.
“Brett Williams was a special kid,” Holbrook said in a statement. “He had all the traits coaches love to have on their teams. He had great character, a tireless work ethic and an incredible personality that we were all drawn to. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his beautiful family and everyone in the Lexington and White Knoll community. #22 will be deeply missed.”
Williams died Tuesday, reportedly from unknown causes after having trouble breathing.
Williams played first base and pitched for White Knoll as a freshman. He committed to the Gamecocks on Jan. 5.
