The 2017 baseball season was uncharacteristically unpleasant for the South Carolina Gamecocks, who finished the year at 35-25, missing the NCAA Tournament.
But the past few days have provided some optimism after that long season. On Friday, Mark Kingston was hired away from the University of South Florida to become the Gamecocks’ next head coach, taking over for an embattled Chad Holbrook. On Sunday, Kingston made the first hires to his staff. According to D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers Kingston is bringing in Mike Current from USF, and retaining current South Carolina pitching coach Jerry Meyers:

As one of the top programs in the country, the Gamecocks should be able to turn things around quickly, though the pressure is always high with a program this prominent. Regardless, South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner certainly believes he has the right man for the job, and these two new hires will certainly play a large role in that turnaround.
