Take the name of a potential candidate for the South Carolina baseball opening off the list.
Wake Forest coach Tom Walter agreed to a seven-year extension with the Demon Deacons on Monday, the school announced.
Walter had been talked about as a possible candidate to fill the vacancy created by Chad Holbrook’s resignation on June 6.
The news of Walter’s contract extension comes days after South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said he expected the Gamecocks to have a new coach “in the near future.”
“So we’re narrowing down the search and hope to name a coach in the next few days,” Tanner said to WIS-TV.
The only candidate Tanner is known to have hosted for an interview is South Florida head coach Mark Kingston, who has made the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons.
Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan has been a rumored candidate for some time. But with the Gators winning the program’s first College World Series on Wednesday, the likelihood could have shifted.
Indiana’s Chris Lemonis and Oklahoma State coach Josh Holliday are thought to be potential candidates.
