South Carolina-Ole Miss preview
In that matchup more than two months ago, Chris Silva, who was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday, led South Carolina with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Frank Booker poured in 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting from behind the 3-point line. No other Gamecocks player scored in double figures.
Ole Miss has since parted ways with coach Andy Kennedy, who stepped down on Feb. 18. Kennedy and South Carolina coach Frank Martin worked together as assistants on Bob Huggins’ staff at Cincinnati.
“[It’s] sad because I know who he is as a human being, and he’s a heck of a basketball coach,” Martin said. “When you take into consideration the school has had [seven] 20-win seasons in its history before him and nine in [his] 12 years. It’s sad we’re losing someone like that in this league.
“Sad for Ole Miss. That’s home. … I know how much that place means to him. It’s sad that I’ve read what he’s said about his team, and I’ve had private conversations with him, too. It’s sad it’s gotten to the point that it did this season with him.”
Tony Madlock is serving as the Rebels’ interim coach. Ole Miss is 1-3 since he took over in February.
The winner of South Carolina-Ole Miss moves on to play Arkansas on Thursday night. Florida will face the winner of that game in the quarterfinals on Friday.
“We’re going over there to win Wednesday, and if you win Wednesday, you get a chance to play Thursday, and we’ll deal with Thursday when Wednesday is over with,” Martin said. “We’re excited.”
