Most of the South Carolina community was already in shock after the Gamecocks’ 23-22 loss to The Citadel on Saturday.
That shock was heightened another notch after a false report circulated that interim coach Shawn Elliott had resigned.
A Twitter account, @GamecockColonel, started the rumor and used a South Carolina beat writer’s Twitter avatar to dupe people into thinking it came from a trusted source, before Elliott used his personal account to shut down the noise.
During Elliott’s weekly teleconference Sunday, he remained befuddled by the incident and expressed a lot of discontent with the person who started the rumor.
“Anybody who knows me knows I don’t quit,” Elliott said. “That’s not who I am, not what I’m about and never going to be about. You just understand that, but I was really shocked to have someone have the time (to do that). Apparently, they don’t have any type of life to put a fake account out there that’s untrue about a football coach or anyone for that matter.”
“That’s a pretty sick individual if you ask me,” he added.
