There’s no such thing as replacing Pharoh Cooper, but South Carolina coach Will Muschamp may have found a new talent to take Cooper’s starting job: And he’s a freshman.
Muschamp highlighted early enrollee Bryan Edwards during his Monday press conference. Edwards will begin spring ball as South Carolina’s No. 1 receiver.
“I am very pleased with his offseason,” Muschamp said according to The State’s Josh Kendall.
Edwards is a four-star recruit from Conway, S.C. He was rated as the No. 45 wide receiver in the country, according to 247Sports.com. He will have some big shoes to fill. Cooper led the Gamecocks with 66 catches, 973 yards and eight touchdowns last season.
South Carolina’s wide receivers outside of Cooper were lackluster. The next leading receiver was sophomore Deebo Samuel, who caught 12 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown. No other receivers caught a touchdown pass last season.
Muschamp emphasized that he wants to see more out of his returning receivers Monday. If not, more incoming freshmen could get an opportunity to land a starting job.
