South Carolina coaches offered their condolences for the friends and family of a local high school football player who died Thursday.
The Associated Press reported River Bluff sophomore defensive tackle Lewis N. Simpkins died Wednesday night after collapsing at football practice. Gamecocks head baseball coach Chad Holbrook and head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin both tweeted their support for the River Bluff Gators community on Thursday morning.

Simpkins collapsed near the end of a two-hour practice. An assistant coach and athletic trainers performed CPR and used a defibrillator on him while they waited for paramedics. He was pronounced dead at Lexington Medical Center later that night. He was 14.
