Columbia, South Carolina will likely always be a football town, but for one week, it will transform into a basketball haven. For the first time, maybe ever, the university is prioritizing its men’s hoops team ahead of football.
The university planned to break ground on its new football indoor facility this Saturday, April 1, but seeing as though there’s a pretty big basketball game that night, South Carolina has postponed it according to Gamecocks beat writer Josh Kendall of The State.

Not that the basketball team desires to displace the football team in the hearts of the South Carolina faithful, but it has to feel good to earn their mutual respect. The basketball team could now do something the football team never has – win a national championship.
The last sports national championship for South Carolina came in women’s equestrian in 2015. The school has won nine national titles overall – six in women’s equestrian, two in baseball, and one in women’s outdoor track and field.
South Carolina will face Gonzaga in the Final Four on Saturday at 6:09 p.m. ET.
