Players on the South Carolina football team are set to report for duty on Sunday, with the first day of preseason camp scheduled for Monday.
Below are five things Gamecocks fans need to know during the month of August. Plan accordingly.
The Sunday schedule
Are you chomping at the bit for information from South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, the players and assistant coaches?
Muschamp kicks off the Gamecocks’ annual preseason media day festivities with a 3 p.m. press conference at Williams-Brice Stadium on Sunday. Then, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., players will be made available for interviews. Muschamp’s no freshman-interview-policy is back for 2017.
Assistant coaches will be heard from at various points throughout the month of August.
Week 1 availability
On Monday, reporters are permitted to watch the first three periods of practice, which starts at 9 a.m. SEC Country will be there to snap pictures and observe who’s doing what. It’s a narrow window that’s mostly filled by stretching and light position work.
Practice resumes Tuesday morning at 9. Reporters won’t get to watch this workout, but offensive coordinator Kurt Roper and requested offensive players are scheduled to be meet with the media once it’s over.
Wednesday mirrors Monday.
Thursday will look like Tuesday, but with defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and a handful of defensive players.
Friday: see Monday and Wednesday.
Saturday is an off day for everyone. Practice resumes Sunday, Aug. 6, but there is no media availability.
When are the other assistant coaches scheduled to speak with reporters?
- Co-OC/WR coach Bryan McClendon: Aug. 8
- DL coach Lance Thompson: Aug. 10
- OL coach Eric Wolford: Aug. 15
- Bucks coach Mike Peterson: Aug. 17
- RB coach Bobby Bentley/TE coach Pat Washington: Aug. 25
- LB coach Coleman Hutzler: Aug. 26
It will be a few weeks before fans can get their first look at the South Carolina football team since the spring game on April 1.
Fan Appreciation Day at Colonial Life Arena is set for Saturday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. Fan Appreciation Night is two days later at Williams-Brice Stadium. The practice, which is open to the public, starts at 7:30 p.m.
Both events are free to attend.
The first episode of Carolina Calls from Wild Wings Café is set for Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.
After the media day news conference on Sunday, Muschamp isn’t scheduled to speak in front of reporters again until Aug. 12. That Saturday is the first of two stadium scrimmages before the opener against North Carolina State.
Muschamp will speak again seven days later, following stadium scrimmage No. 2.
Not counting Carolina Calls and his TV show on Sunday, Aug. 27, Muschamp won’t make another media appearance until Tuesday, Aug. 29, when he has his first game-week news conference of the season.
