The latest #SpursUp
Three-star athlete Bryce Thompson committed to South Carolina on Wednesday.
The Dutch Fork High School (Irmo, S.C.) standout posted the news on Twitter.
Thompson picked the Gamecocks over offers from East Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and others. He’s rated as the No. 38 overall athlete in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite.
Hale McGranahan of SEC Country breaks down what South Carolina fans can expect from the program’s newest commit.
“Thompson was one of the top performers at the Rivals stop in Charlotte, where he was virtually uncoverable,” McGranahan wrote of the prospect’s performance in the camp circuit last spring. “He followed that up with what pretty much amounted to a repeat performance when The Opening made its annual stop in the Queen City.”
Thompson projects as a defensive back or wide receiver, but he “does a little bit of everything,” according to Derek White, his former coach at Ben Lippen High School (Columbia, S.C.).
The 3-star athlete rushed for 1,392 yards and 28 touchdowns, with more than 600 yards receiving and 6 more scores for Dutch Fork High School (Irmo, S.C.) this past season.
‘You’re a priority’
Four-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge is one of South Carolina coach Will Muschamp’s “must-get guys,” according to McGranahan. Sandidge hears from the second-year South Carolina coach every day.
Muschamp’s message is simple: “You’re a priority and you’ve got a big opportunity at South Carolina.”
The Concord (N.C.) High School standout is taking his time with his decision but has zeroed in on five schools: Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina and South Carolina. He plans to announce his choice in two months
Sandidge is rated as the No. 130 overall prospect for 2018, according to the 247Sports composite.
What a rush
Three-star wide receiver Darius Rush will enroll at South Carolina next month as an athlete, potentially seeing time at defensive back in his first year on campus.
“Wherever I’m needed, [they’ll] put me there,” Rush said. “And that’s fine with me. I just want to get on the field and give it my all.”
The Greeleyville, S.C., native was the Gamecocks’ first commit in their 2018 recruiting class. He’s rated as the No. 27 prospect in the state by 247Sports.
The 6-foot-2 prospect caught 47 passes for 863 yards and 17 touchdowns last season for C.E. Murray High School.
‘An extremely bright future’
Though his commitment didn’t have as much fanfare as others, 2019 offensive tackle and new South Carolina commit Jaylen Nichols should excite Gamecocks fans.
“I think he’s got an extremely bright future. His recruiting was really just kind of starting to take off here, but South Carolina has been with him since day 1, back into his sophomore season,” said Scott Chadwick, Nichols’ coach at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C. “He just felt real comfortable with the situation down there. He’s not one of these guys that’s out there looking to rack up offers and Twitter likes or anything like that. That’s not what he’s about.”
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman has already seen interest from Clemson, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, N.C. State and more.
An in-state prospect, Thompson has already wowed fans at Williams-Brice Stadium. The newest Gamecocks commit posted 168 all-purpose yards and 2 touchdowns in Dutch Fork’s 28-27 win over Dorman in the Class 5A championship game on Dec. 2.

Horn is one of the Gamecocks’ top remaining targets for 2018. He took an official visit to Columbia last weekend.
The onetime Tennessee commit is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 203 overall prospect for 2018.
