Four-star defensive end and 2019 prospect Joseph Anderson gave the South Carolina Gamecocks football team its first commitment of the weekend on Friday.

“With his commitment, Anderson joins 5-star end Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.), 3-star tackle Jahkeem Green (Highland Community College) and 3-star end Devontae Davis (Georgia Military) in the Gamecocks’ defensive line haul,” SEC Country’s Hale McGranahan writes.

Anderson is rated as the No. 208 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports composite.

The good news continued for the Gamecocks on Saturday when 3-star linebacker and 2019 prospect Derek Boykins committed.

Ranked as the No. 30 outside linebacker in his class, Boykins picked South Carolina over Clemson, Kentucky, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

With pledges from Anderson and Boykins, the Gamecocks’ 2019 haul is now ranked No. 4 overall in the country.

‘A really good time’

Four-star junior college tackle Anthony Whigan was among the prospects in Columbia for an official visit over the weekend.

“It was good. My mom, dad and I, we enjoyed ourselves,” Whigan said. “It was a really good time. I had fun and I learned a lot about South Carolina.”

The Lackawanna (Scranton, Pa.) Community College tackle is rated as the No. 6 JUCO prospect for 2019.

Feeling elite

Four-star quarterback and South Carolina commit Ryan Hilinski turned heads at the Elite 11 competition in California over the weekend.

“We have seen Hilinski a ton this offseason, and he has improved by leaps and bounds from a year ago,” 247Sports’ Greg Biggins wrote. “He’s a big, strong kid who has improved his mobility, accuracy and downfield touch. The arm strength was always there, and the South Carolina pledge is a highly intelligent kid as well playing with a ton of confidence.”

The Orange (Calif.) Lutheran standout is South Carolina’s second-highest rated pledge for 2019, tabbed as the No. 165 overall prospect for the cycle.
