“You’re wanting a guy that loves the game and loves the process of the game, doesn’t just love Saturday, but loves being a quarterback that would rather come over and watch tape on a Thursday night than go hang out with his friends,” offensive coordinator Kurt Roper said.

Between starting QB Jake Bentley’s on-field production and the noticeable improvement of backup Michael Scarnecchia, it’s clear Roper knows how to coach ’em up — but he also knows how to recruit ’em.

The Gamecocks offensive coordinator has been on a hot streak with his evaluations as of late — with Class of 2018 quarterbacks Chase Wolf and Tyler Shough both receiving more Power 5 offers following the Gamecocks’ interest.

QB target heads to Tuscaloosa

One of the Gamecocks’ top quarterback targets for 2018 is taking a scheduled visit to Alabama.

With former quarterbacks Lorenzo Nunez and Brandon McIlwain both departing the program, Dakereon Joyner has become a major priority for the Gamecocks.

The North Charleston, S.C., native lists Alabama, Georgia, N.C. State, Oregon and South Carolina as his favorites. He’s set to announce his commitment on Father’s Day.

Elmore arrives

Minnesota graduate transfer Gaelin Elmore, a defensive end, arrived in Columbia for his official visit late Sunday night.

Elmore could provide an immediate boost to the Gamecocks in a serious area of need: pass rush.

New contracts coming for coaches

On the heels of a Final Four run for the men and a national championship for the women, coaches Frank Martin and Dawn Staley are set to receive new contracts, according to The State.

Both coaches should see bumps in compensation, thanks to their respective success.

Athletic director Ray Tanner is likely to submit the new contracts for approval at the next board of trustees meeting on April 21.

Gamecocks want revenge

“Every game is big, but we definitely want to get some revenge on those guys,” USC second baseman LT Tolbert said of Gamecocks’ game against North Carolina on Tuesday. “That’s a little bit more motivation.”

The Gamecocks suffered their worst loss in the last 10 years at the hands of the Tar Heels in 2016 — a 15-0 thrashing at the same BB&T Ballpark.

The biggest stories for South Carolina will be on the mound, with redshirt freshman Cody Morris toeing the rubber and closer Tyler Johnson healthy and available for the first time in more than a month.

Montgomery earns spot in Yankees’ rotation

It was reported on Monday that former South Carolina pitcher Jordan Montgomery has earned a starting spot with the Yankees …

“Montgomery, a left-hander, won the job as the New York Yankees’ fifth starter, according to multiple reports on Monday,” wrote Mike Wilson. “Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays will be his first appearance in that role.”

In his three years in Columbia, the Sumter, S.C., native posted a 20-7 record with a 2.87 ERA.
