The South Carolina Gamecocks and first-year coach Will Muschamp landed a major commitment Thursday from four-star quarterback Jake Bentley.
A family connection may have played a role in Bentley’s decision. His father, Bobby Bentley, is South Carolina’s running backs coach. The Opelika, Ala., native is rated as the No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 104 overall recruit in the Class of 2017, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
“After many prayers and talks with my family, I have decided that I am coming back home and committing to the University of South Carolina,” Jake Bentley wrote in a statement.
The quarterback had plenty of suitors during his recruitment and chose the Gamecocks over SEC foes Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, UGA, LSU and Vanderbilt.
Bobby Bentley is beginning his first season in Columbia, S.C., after working with Muschamp as an offensive analyst at Auburn the past two seasons.
The Gamecocks are holding an open spring competition for its starting quarterback job. Redshirt senior Perry Orth, sophomore Lorenzo Nunez, redshirt junior Connor Mitch and redshirt sophomore Michael Scarnecchia are all in the mix for the starting duties.
This move also pays big dividends for South Carolina’s entire Class of 2017, which ranks No. 13 nationally with the addition of Jake Bentley.
