Earlier this month, a pair of South Carolina assistants stopped by Chaminade-Madonna Prep (Hollywood, Fla.) to check up on a pair of playmakers from the Class of 2018.
Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson was the first Gamecocks coach to visit the school in Hollywood, Fla. Running backs coach Bobby Bentley was the next.
And it was Bentley who dropped off the offer to running back Shaun Shivers and wide receiver Xavier Williams on May 16.
“My head coach told me, because South Carolina, they were asking about me,” Shivers said.
Robinson watched Shivers and Williams go through on-field drills during spring practice.
“Coach T-Rob, when he first came out to practice, I scored a touchdown … he told me I’m slow, (but) he was playing with me, because he knows I’m fast,” Shivers said.
South Carolina joined an offer list that also includes Auburn, Kentucky, LSU, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
“Since that (South Carolina) offer, I’m looking into them right now, so I’m just going to learn more from one of my friends who goes there, Chris Lammons,” Shivers said.
He and Williams are scheduled to visit South Carolina on June 13.
“I’m just trying to see more about the practice (fields) and take a tour around, to explore the campus,” Shivers said.
They’ll also make stops at Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern.
For Shivers, who’s listed at 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, several factors will be considered as he moves through the recruiting process.
“A school that best fits me — I love a spread offense, and a team that runs the ball a lot,” he said.
As a sophomore, Shivers rushed 148 times for 1,219 yards and 19 touchdowns.
