The South Carolina defensive brain trust continues to cast a wide net for potential 2019 candidates at the Buck spot, a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end position. Among the options is 4-star defensive end Dante Walker.
Walker, who attends Riverdale (Ga.) High School, lists offers from Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi State, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Gamecocks hosted the 6-foot-3, 240-pound prospect earlier this month.
“Practice was pretty good. I got to sit in on the meetings. How they run things and do things is what stood out. It was pretty nice,” he said.
Outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson spent time with Walker, the No. 123 prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports composite.
“He just [said] attack, I have a great first step, stuff like that. He was just telling me about my game and how much they would love to have me there,” Walker said.
Coach Will Muschamp’s work over the last two seasons has Walker thinking the Gamecocks could contend in the SEC in 2018.
“He’s turned the program around, so I think this season coming, with the talent they’ve got, they’re going to be that team to beat this year,” Walker said.
“Everything is close, the facilities, weight room,” he added. “Everything is just right there and I think that’s convenient and the way they run things, too, it’s pretty cool.”
Tennessee’s new staff had him on campus earlier this year. Up next, he hopes to visit Mississippi State, Florida and Miami.
“What I’m trying to do is take as many visits as possible, narrow it down, see what I like and don’t like,” Walker said. “I know what I want to do, major-wise, and the schools that have it and don’t have it. I’ve made that list. Now I’m just trying to find a home fit.”
