Emerging QB target
South Carolina continues its search for another quarterback who’s eligible to join the team in time for the 2017 season.
Westin Elliott, a junior college prospect from Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, where Cam Newton played, has been in contact with South Carolina director of player personnel Matt Lindsey.
“Right now, I’m just waiting to hear from (offensive coordinator Kurt) Roper and see if we can get a visit set up,” Elliott told Phil Kornblut of SportsTalksc.com and a recruiting writer for Spurs & Feathers. “Recruiting is just now starting for JUCOs since all of the (Division I schools) are just now finishing up their spring practices and games.
“So, this week or next, recruiting should pick up, but the main schools I’ve been in contact with recently are Washington State, Louisiana Tech and South Carolina.”
Elliott (6-foot-5, 200 pounds) was a full qualifier from Midland (Texas) Christian, where he graduated in 2016. Arkansas State, North Texas, SMU, Stephen F. Austin and Tulsa expressed interest while he was in high school.
As a freshman at Blinn, Elliott appeared in 5 games, passing for 670 yards and 6 touchdowns with 5 interceptions.
South Carolina offer flurry
The Gamecocks coaches sent out several offers on Wednesday, including one from defensive line coach Lance Thompson to Jeffery Johnson, a 2018 defensive tackle from Brookhaven (Miss.) High School.
“I think it’s an excellent football program that I would love to be a part of,” Johnson said. “I watched a couple of games last year. Great coaching staff and I think the coaches did a good job.”
According to 247Sports, Johnson (6-3, 312) is ranked as the No. 42 defensive tackle in the country. Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Louisville and LSU are also listed among his offers.
Four-star defensive end Jamarcus Chatman (6-3, 261) also reported an offer from South Carolina. The 4-star recruit from Rome (Ga.) High School has offers from Florida, Florida State, Michigan and Miami.
Four-star cornerback Kaiir Elam (6-0.5, 177) added South Carolina to his offer sheet, which also includes Florida, Kentucky and Pittsburgh. Elam, who’s ranked as the No. 3 cornerback in the Class of 2019, attends The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Fla.
Florida RB visits
Three-star running back Jashaun Corbin, who’s ranked as the No. 48 running back in the Class of 2018, was in Columbia on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Nate Hooks Jr., his coach at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, tweeted the itinerary for his visit.
It provided some insight into how Muschamp and the South Carolina staff treat unofficial visitors.

Three have been issued for 3-star quarterback Chase Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio), who recently said South Carolina is a leader, alongside Boston College.
Three-star wide receiver Jatavious Harris (Milledgeville, Ga.) was issued another prediction for the Gamecocks.
