South Carolina recruiting: Are Gamecocks on commitment watch this weekend?
We are tackling the best question supplied by South Carolina football fans each day. If you’d like to submit one, tweet to Hale McGranahan here.
Welcome to Friday, Oct. 26, 2017:
Daniel Hannum asks … “Chances Tindall, Samuel, Wonnum or Wilson commit this weekend? Any chance of a commitment for the ’18 or ’19 class before the end of October?”
Channing Tindall, Asante Samuel Jr., Dylan Wonnum and Divaad Wilson are the top 2018 prospects confirmed as visitors for Saturday. Given the lack of space left for the Gamecocks in that haul, it’s a solid number of guests for the game against Vanderbilt.
If I had to say one of those guys might commit to South Carolina this weekend, I’d go with Tindall, even though I don’t necessarily think it’s going to happen.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s possible, but the 4-star linebacker from Spring Valley High School (Columbia, S.C.) might have another visit or two to take before he’s ready to make a decision. He did go to Georgia a few weeks ago for the Mississippi State game, which I’m told helped the Bulldogs pick up ground.
But we’ll see. Again, I wouldn’t rule it out. But I also wouldn’t count on it, like I’m about to do with the other three.
As for the South Florida cornerbacks, Samuel and Wilson, I’d say we’re still a little way out from determining whether those guys are candidates to hop on board with the Gamecocks. They’re committed to Florida State and Florida, respectively, so it’s hard to imagine either one flipping during an official visit.
Generally speaking, the chances of that happening are low.
Then there’s Wonnum, who’s been to South Carolina countless of times over the last two years. I think it’s safe to say: follow the visits. However, there’s time left before his announcement, which is targeted for December.
As for the second part, I don’t anticipate any 2019 commitments within the next five days. Then again, I wasn’t anticipating the commitments by Ahdarrious Gee and Rodricus Fitten.
