Another name to know
There was a time when the South Carolina football staff planned to take just one wide receiver with the 2019 signing class. According to T.J. Jones, a 3-star prospect on 247Sports, that’s no longer the case.
“At first, [offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon said] they were going to take only one guy this year and something came up and he’s already watching my film and stuff,” Jones said. “He said I’m the next guy he wants to coach and he’s going to recruit me hard.”
Jones, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect from Lake City (Fla.) Columbia, is one of several 2019 prospects with an offer from South Carolina. Four-star Jamario Holley (Rock Hill, S.C.) is the only one who’s committed to the Gamecocks.
Jones has yet to visit and is “still kind of learning” about South Carolina.
Who he’s seen
Earlier this spring, Jones took an official visit to Texas A&M.
“The atmosphere was different and I’d never been out of state like that before, so it was a great atmosphere and I loved it. It was my first time flying,” Jones said.
Jones has also taken unofficial trips to Florida, Ole Miss and South Florida. He hopes to see Louisville and Tennessee, too. He shared his thoughts on the three SEC schools:
Florida: “Just how the coaches were. The food was good. We played the game and saw the new indoor facility, so it was nice.”
Ole Miss: “It stood out to me, because fellow Columbia High players and they were just telling me how it works down there, how they grind and where they’re going to live at and how they treat football players.”
Tennessee: “Former teammates are up there, too, from Columbia. That’s why I want to get up there and see how it is, see if I can build a connection.”
