The 2018 South Carolina recruiting class no longer includes 4-star safety Marlon Character Jr., a junior college prospect who began his career at Auburn.
Phil Kornblut was first to report the news, which has since been confirmed by Tony Morrell of TheBigSpur.
“I won’t sign with them,” Character told Kornblut. “I currently have no offers. [South Carolina] pulled out.”
When Character committed to the Gamecocks last summer, Character did so with the understanding that his offer was good, as long as he graduated in December.
The No. 18 ranked JUCO prospect in the Class of 2018 is currently enrolled at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Character, who’s originally from Grady High School in Atlanta, Ga., committed to South Carolina before graduating, but ended up signing with Auburn, where he redshirted as a freshman.
South Carolina signed four defensive backs in December: 3-star safety Jonathan Gipson, 4-star cornerback Jaycee Horn, 3-star safety Israel Mukuamu and 3-star safety R.J. Roderick.
One other is committed to sign in February: 3-star athlete Bryce Thompson. Plus, the Gamecocks recently offered Virginia commitment D.J. Brown, a 3-star cornerback, so they may not be done at the position yet.
