Whenever Will Muschamp lands a commitment, the South Carolina coach drops a #SpursUp on Twitter. Come to SEC Country for the latest news, notes and observations in South Carolina recruiting.
South Carolina pushing for VT pledge
Among the prospects from the state of South Carolina’s loaded 2018 recruiting cycle, two have already made commitments: Jake Venables, the son of Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, and Bryce Thompson, a 3-star athlete from Ben Lippen School in Columbia.
Thompson was first to pull the trigger, when he committed to Virginia Tech in July.
However, South Carolina remains in the picture for the 6-foot, 180-pound prospect who’s being recruited as a defensive back. On Saturday, he was back on campus for the Gamecocks’ first junior day event of the year.
“They were just telling me about how South Carolina is on the come-up. They’re changing. … They’re building a foundation,” Thompson said. “They were telling me, if I went there, I would play nickel or the safety position and I would be a good fit for their team.”
Virginia Tech’s coaches have yet to make a firm decision on where they would like him to play, though wide receiver appears to be the choice, at least for now. For Thompson, he’s yet to settle on which side of the ball he would prefer.
“That’s one of the decisions I’m trying to make right now,” he said. “I’m trying to figure out if I want to play offense or defense. I figure, if I can figure out what position I want to play, then I’ll know for sure what school I’ll end up going to.
“Right now, I don’t know. It’s very tough and complicated.”
So is the decision on where he wants to go to college. South Carolina, by proximity, has helped make it that much more difficult.
“That’s one reason. I want to make sure that my whole family to be at every home game, too. I keep that in mind,” Thompson said. “My coaches, my high school coaches don’t have to go far to watch me play. I can still see all of my old friends and stuff. But the thing is, with VT, it’s just far enough to where I can get away … meet new people and don’t have to worry about the drama here and all the stuff.”
Several other schools are starting to show interest. N.C. State offered Friday and the Wolfpack coaches have invited him to Raleigh for a visit. The coaches from right around the corner in Chapel Hill are also looking to score a visit.
Georgia, Tennessee and Florida State continue to express interest.
